Trying to figure out freestyle flip turns on your own can be difficult. It’s not something that comes naturally to most people, so to learn effective freestyle flip turns most swimmers must be taught. You can take the trial and error method but this will never allow you to really ‘nail’ flip turns. The simplest way to improve your freestyle flip turns is to avoid the single biggest mistake freestyle swimmers make.

Many swimmers tend to use their arms in order to help them flip over in a turn. As they approach the wall they put their arms in front of their head and ‘scoop’ the water in a circular motion to initiate the flip. This not only places the swimmers arms in the incorrect position before pushing off from the wall, but slows down their momentum greatly. This requires the swimmer to overcome huge amounts of resistance to get their arms back in the streamline position before they push off.

The correct method for performing a freestyle flip turn is to bring both arms to your side after you have taken your last stroke. Keep your arms by your side as you drop your chin to your chest and initiate the flip motion by performing a downward dolphin kick.

As your body is performing the flip motion, your arms will stay in the same position as when you begun the flip motion and they will go into streamline position. As your feet hit the wall shoulder width apart, your upper body will be straight and streamlined with the hands together, and your legs will be bent at the knees ready to push off. You should be on your back or rotated slightly to a maximum of 45 degrees at this stage.

As you push off the wall begin your rotation to your front as you perform a dolphin kick off the wall or go back into your freestyle stroke.

Make a point to avoid using your arms to help you flip and instead keep your arms by your side while your body performs the flip. To initiate the flip put your chin to your chest, bend at the waist and perform a downward dolphin kick. Your arms should then remain where they were when you begun your flip, and then they will be able to go straight into a streamline position as you hit the wall.

If you follow these simple instructions, you might find yourself performing fast and effective freestyle flip turns.
